QuickReads | Celebrating Community, Creativity, and Civic Engagement
As we kick off the new year, Irvine is moving forward with energy, creativity, and a strong sense of community. In recent weeks, we’ve seen people come together in ways that reflect what makes our City special — from service and inclusion to student voices, public art, and major City projects. These updates offer a quick look at the meaningful work shaping Irvine as the year begins.
Mornings with the Mayor
I am happy to share that Mornings with the Mayor returns this Saturday, January 17! Join me at the Irvine Civic Center (1 Civic Center Plaza) from 9 to 10 a.m. to share your questions, concerns, and ideas for our City.
This is an informal and relaxed opportunity to connect directly with me. There’s no formal agenda — just a friendly space to chat, share your thoughts, and be heard. I look forward to connecting with you and hearing what’s on your mind. Whether you want to share ideas or simply say hello, I hope to see you there!
Irvine Fieldhouse
Exciting news! New renderings of the Irvine Fieldhouse offer a sneak peek at this incredible community centerpiece. Designed to serve as a hub for sports, recreation, and gatherings, the facility will feature ten multi-use courts and ten badminton courts, a spacious multipurpose room, office space, a food court, and 369 parking spots for easy access. Construction is in progress on the 110,000-square-foot base building in the Irvine Business Complex, with the shell expected to be completed by April 2026. We can’t wait to see this project come to life and become a vibrant part of our community!
C-SPAN StudentCAM Interview
I had the pleasure of welcoming Katelyn, Nour, and Jayden from Orange County School of the Arts, who stopped by full of enthusiasm and well-prepared. These talented students are participating in C-SPAN’s StudentCAM video contest, creating a documentary that explores the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence through the lens of youth service and civic responsibility. Wishing them the best of luck — I can’t wait to see their project come to life and showcase their creativity and civic spirit!
Urban Forest Photo Contest
As a City that values its trees, Irvine’s vibrant urban canopy plays a vital role in cooling streets, beautifying neighborhoods, and enriching our quality of life. Residents have beautifully captured this through photographs that showcase the everyday beauty of Irvine’s trees and green spaces. With the contest nearing its conclusion on January 30, we look forward to announcing the winners soon. Thank you to everyone who shared what makes Irvine such a special and green place to live — your photos celebrate the heart of our community!
Friends for Special Needs
I had the pleasure of attending the Friends for Special Needs Volunteer Awards & Recognition Event, and it was inspiring to celebrate the individuals whose dedication makes this organization’s impactful work possible. Founded in 2015, Friends for Special Needs provides inclusive, student-run programs that foster friendships, encourage learning, and offer vital support to families within Irvine’s special needs community. The morning was powerful reminder of how committed volunteers strengthen our City’s inclusion and compassion.
